What is Right to Rent?

Right to Rent requires the landlord to check that any person over the age of 18 is legally entitled to live or remain in the UK. It is important that this check is done on all tenants over the age of 18, not just those who you suspect of remaining illegally.

Landlords can be fined up to £3000 if they are found to be renting a property to someone who isn't legally allowed to live in the UK and cannot prove that their "right to rent" has been checked. It is up to either the landlord, management agents or the estate agents to carry out these checks.
